Luggage & suitcase sizes
Luggage size is important whether you’re a big jetsetter or simply enjoy the occasional weekend getaway. The right type of suitcase will not only make travelling a lot smoother – especially if you’re flying somewhere – but a lot comfier too. To help you choose, here are the three key luggage sizes…
-
Carry-on luggage
If you’re a light packer (read: miracle worker) and want to avoid baggage claim, a carry-on bag is ideal. Most airlines allow carry-on luggage that’s 56 x 45 x 25cm or smaller, but definitely check before you fly!
-
Medium check-in luggage
Not bothered about lugging your stuff around with you? Medium-size suitcases and bags *should* offer enough space to comfortably pack for a week-long holiday (depending on what you’ve got planned).
-
Large check-in luggage
Sometimes the bigger the better. A large-size suitcase will give you the extra room to bring bulky items or more clothes for a longer trip. And if you don’t fill the whole thing, there’ll be space for souvenirs.
Hard luggage vs soft luggage
This is a biggie when comparing types of luggage. Hard luggage is made of a hard material, like aluminum or polycarbonate, while soft luggage is made of fabric – and both have their benefits.
-
Hard luggage
Hard luggage will never rip or tear and, since it’s harder to overstuff, you’ll be less likely to damage any zips. Hard luggage can also withstand snow, rain and hail, and is easy to clean too. Plus, it’ll protect your belongings more than soft luggage.
-
Soft luggage
If you need to quickly grab something, soft luggage is easier to squeeze your hand into without opening the suitcase completely. It's also more flexible so you can stuff a few extra bits in here and there – just be careful you don't break the zips!
