Your guide to outdoor essentials

Whether you’re scaling peaks or strolling through the park, having the right gear is crucial. The secret to staying comfortable? The layering system. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating mid-layer and finish with a protective outer shell. (Don’t forget to leave the cotton at home – it won’t do you any favours when you’re working up a sweat).

From waterproof jackets that keep the rain at bay to thermals that lock in the heat, we’ve got the essentials sorted.

The layering system explained

A good base layer draws moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry. Your mid-layer is all about insulation – think fleece and baselayers that trap warmth. Finally, your outer layer acts as a shield against wind and rain. Mix and match from our range to build your perfect outdoor armour.

Choosing the right footwear

Happy feet make for happy hikers. The right footwear is non-negotiable for outdoor activities. Whether you need the ankle support of sturdy walking boots for rugged terrain, the flexibility of walking shoes for lighter trails, or trusty wellies for muddy puddles, look for options with excellent grip and waterproofing.

Materials and fabrics decoded

Navigating outdoor fabrics can feel like learning a new language. Synthetics like polyester and nylon are brilliant for their quick-drying and durable properties, making them ideal for rainy conditions. Merino wool is a natural wonder – it regulates temperature, wicks moisture and resists odours, making it perfect for base layers and socks.

When it comes to outerwear, understand the difference between water-repellent (handles light showers) and waterproof (keeps you dry in a downpour). Choose a softshell jacket for breathability during active pursuits or a hardshell for maximum protection in harsh weather.

Getting the perfect fit

Outdoor clothing needs to fit well to perform well. Base layers should be snug to wick moisture effectively, while outer layers need enough room to accommodate layers underneath. When trying on gear, check for adjustable features like cuffs, hoods and hems to seal out the elements.

Caring for your outdoor gear

Look after your gear and it will look after you. Follow the care instructions carefully – washing, drying and reproofing your clothing correctly extends its life and maintains its performance.
