Nobody likes losing money. Especially not Gareth.
My name is Gareth and I'm the district loss prevention manager for Southern Ireland. Loss Prevention looks at many aspects of loss to bottom line profit, and it's probably one of the most interesting career paths you can go down. We examine everything from internal and external theft, to the way we price merchandise and how we can put merchandise on the shelves more safely.
In a typical CCTV security system, we'll have 32 cameras that can pan, tilt, and zoom, meaning we can see pretty much everything happening in the store. For example, I can zero straight in on price labels. That helps us determine whether someone is swapping the price labels - which is a criminal offence we have to deal with.
People think of a job like this as catching thieves. But that's only a small percentage of what we do. It's really a very big mixed bag of detective, psychology, business and management work. We collaborate with management teams, we speak to associates, we get out there to train, educate, and show people exactly how we lose money. And that means there's not a day that goes by where I don't learn something new.
What I've discovered about myself since being at TK Maxx is that I've got the passion and desire to succeed. TK Maxx have given me the tools to go out there and achieve. They've opened my eyes to ways in which retailers lose money and that's made me a bit ahead of the game.
