Please note that applications for our Merchandising, Buying, IT and Distribution Placement Programmes are now closed. We are continuing to accept applications for the Finance Placement Programme until 29th February 2012.
INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENTS & INTERNSHIPS
We have a broad range of 12 month placements available, suitable for undergraduate students who are planning to spend their 3rd year in industry. And because all our placements are open to any degree discipline, you might just find an unexpected opportunity that's a perfect fit for you.
Buying
Off–price. It's a lean business model without frills or fancy extras. It involves buying when we find something amazing – much like our customers do – all year round and as close to season as possible to get the best deal. No two deals are ever the same, and Buyers are in the market all the time with an open brief to buy anything - as long as it'll wow customers. And as we pay our invoices quickly, collect product from vendors, and never return or cancel orders, they love doing business with us, which puts us in a great position to negotiate on price.
What will you do on a buying placement?
This could be one of the most exciting opportunities around. Our placement students get a real insight into Buying in its purest sense, starting with joining new Buyers on our specially developed induction programme and then through shadowing and being mentored by experienced off–price. It's hard work and a lot of self–directed learning, but one thing's for sure – if you don't know how to negotiate to pay less than full price for something by the end of your placement, we'll be very surprised.
Merchandising
Our Merchandisers ensure that each store has the optimum product assortment. With around £40 million worth of product to allocate annually per department, they respond quickly to customer demand and work on getting the best mix into the stores at the right time and price in order to maximise profit. Considering local markets, trends and past sales, Merchandisers see to it that every customer, whether they're in Krakow, Kilkenny or Kensington High Street, sees a great range in their local store. And they get to use their commercial sense, business management skills and adaptable style every day.
What will you do on a merchandising placement?
The great thing about doing a placement in Merchandising is the head start it'll give you when you graduate. That's because you'll get the same comprehensive 3 month induction as our graduates, do a job as an Allocation Analyst for the remaining 9 months, taking real accountability for your departments and having some amazing development opportunities throughout. For example, last year our Merchandising placement students got to help set up our Regional Allocation Process which involved a trip to our U.S. head office in Boston. Not that we can promise you'll get the same, but we can promise to treat you like the future talent that you are.
Distribution
It's important that our supply chain is just as dynamic as our buying model. The quicker merchandise gets to stores, the quicker it sells, so we've developed a highly sophisticated and unique approach to warehousing, distribution and logistics that involves extremely quick turnaround. As our stores require daily deliveries to keep our customers satisfied, we can't hang around if a process isn't working. Our distribution team is always on top of things, analysing potential glitches and resolving issues as fast as possible. And as it's about people as much as it is product, they have a great understanding team dynamics.
What will you do on a distribution placement?
Joining the Distribution team on placement will give you a great insight to this dynamic function as well as giving you a head start when you graduate. You will get the same comprehensive three month induction as our graduates and then take the role as a Distribution Analyst or Operations manager for the remaining 9 months. This will give you genuine responsibility and experience as well as building your technical knowledge and people skills. Being a part of the Distributions team in either our head office or Processing Centres will also expose you to many other sides of the business as you interact with its numerous customers and business partners.
Information Technology
The TJX Europe IT team are at the heart of our business. As well as nurturing our existing IT landscape, in equal measure, the IT team lead new ways of working, endeavouring to deliver pioneering and innovative IT solutions. They provide our businesses with faster connectivity, simplified processes, new capabilities and more reliable services. What will you do on an IT placement?
With us you will have the unique opportunity to partner with people across our business and not just sit behind a monitor. This is a chance for you, as a Trainee Analyst, to lead your own piece of work. You'll develop a broad set of skills such as business analysis, project management and process improvement, as well as to work with the kind of formal solution delivery process that our large, structured IT department can provide. You will develop your relationship management skills, partnering with people across departments, and seeing how the work you do positively impacts the business. You'll get an induction when you start followed by a huge amount of on the job learning. Your 'buddy' - an experienced member of the IT team – can provide expert advice whenever you need it. And along the way, we'll support you to get some externally recognised qualifications such as ITIL or 6 Sigma, and you may even get a spot of overseas travel. This is about more than something to put on your CV. This is building for your future.
